Abstract:

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurologic system disease and the most common cause of dementia. It has become a significant health concern with enormous social and economic impact globally. The progressive features of the disease begin with irreversible memory loss and gradual deterioration of all the cognitive and physical functions. However, even until now there is no effective therapeutic treatment to stop or reverse the disease progression. Hereby, early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in the preclinical stage is very critical to medically intervene in the development of the disease as soon as possible. Owing to the capacity to efficiently collect and process measurements from small volumes of various biofluids, the microfluidic platform acts as a good candidate for AD diagnostics. This seminar focuses on the applications and impact of microfluidics on Alzheimer’s disease research. We discuss the technical challenges and possible solutions provided by this technique to early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
