Abstract:

The impairment of cartilage lubrication, a major symptom of osteoarthritis (OA), accelerates articular cartilage wear and degeneration, leading to joint disability. The limited cartilage regeneration capability necessitates the need for joint lubrication during OA treatment. In recent years, intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) solution has been widely used for the lubrication of OA joints. However, the retention time of HA in the joint cavity is generally limited due to the presence of hyaluronidase and the easy-diluting nature of the HA solution. Therefore, to alleviate the inconvenience of frequent injections and improve the therapeutic function, it is of great significance to develop functional lubricant such as injectable hydrogels with prolonged intra-articular retention time and enhanced anti-inflammatory property.
