Experimental Learning Facilities
Our dedicated prototyping facilities, located at G/F, Haking Wong Building, empower students and researchers to transform concepts into tangible realities. Primarily designed to enhance undergraduate learning and project development, these labs also support diverse university research initiatives. Our comprehensive resources include advanced machinery and a well-equipped workshop for hands-on fabrication.
Note: Users must bring their own workpieces and RFID-enabled printing filament. Authorization and training are mandatory for self-operation.
3D Printing
Our FDM 3D printers offer rapid prototyping for complex geometries and functional parts. Users must bring their own RFID-enabled printing filament.
- 2 × Bambu Lab X1 Carbon
- 3 × Bambu Lab H2D
Laser cutting
The Thunder Laser enables precise cutting and detailed engraving on wood and plastic, useful for producing parts prior to final assembly. It accommodates workpieces with a maximum size of 1300 × 900 mm.
Vacuum former
The vacuum former is used for creating prototypes and custom molds through thermoforming. The FORMART 2 Pro is designed to handle pieces as large as 470 × 270mm.
CNC Machining
Our Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines provide precise subtractive manufacturing for high-accuracy parts from various materials. Users must bring their own workpieces.
• 5-axis CNC mill: Handles soft metal and plastic parts up to 150 × 150 × 80mm
• CNC lathe: Handles soft metal and plastic parts up to ⌀60 × 140mm
Workshop
Our well-equipped workshop provides various tools for hands-on prototyping, assembly, and finishing work.
Software licenses
The department also provides several software licenses for engineering modeling and simulation tools. You may find the details at https://mech.hku.hk/igsoftware/
