Professor Nicholas Xuanlai Fang (ME) Awarded RGC Senior Research Fellowship
Professor Nicholas Xuanlai Fang, Professor and Chair of Photonics Innovation in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, has been awarded a prestigious Research Grants Council (RGC) Senior Research Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding research in biomedical engineering and medical bioprinting.
His award-winning project titled “Developing Next-Generation Bioprinting Phantoms for Early Screening and Imaging Training of Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases” aims to address the limitations of current surgical training models, which often lack realistic physiological responses and ultrasound imaging features.
The core breakthrough lies in a novel class of “metagels“, advanced materials that enable the independent optimisation of tissue-like mechanical properties and ultrasound visibility. By combining these materials with multi-scale 3D printing and a quantitative ultrasound validation system, Professor Fang and his team seek to create patient-specific bioprinted models that closely replicate human anatomy and physiological behaviour.
The technology could significantly enhance medical training and imaging development, while reinforcing Hong Kong’s growing leadership in medical technology innovation and its position within the global medtech supply chain.
