Ocean waves play a significant role in coastal infrastructure development, maritime activity, and the exploration of ocean resources. Quantitative prediction of their occurrence, behavior, and impact is a major research thrust in ocean engineering. This presentation provides highlights of my research on wave-structure interaction, ocean wave forecasting and hindcasting as well as coastal flood hazards associated with high surf, storm surge, and tsunamis. The academic research is exemplified by practical applications involving ship design, wave resources assessment, flood hazard mitigation, and a large-scale reclamation project.
